There been a lot written about Sen. Biden's questioning of John Roberts, most of it on the mark. Missoula's favorite curmudgeon, Dave Budge, has been covering the Roberts issue exhaustively, as has Montana's favorite Dryland Democrat, Matt Singer, over at Left In The West.
It's almost as if the hearings could be summed up in some remarks Biden has been quoted as saying to Roberts at the conclusion of the hearing..."'You're the best I've ever seen before the committee'..." (UPDATE: the quote has now been verified).
Interesting that some should bring some of the hyperbolic comments up at the very moment when I was trying to imitate Senator Schumer(D) on the one hand as giving the oratorical gem of the day - although the competition for foolish rhetoric was FIERCE - and Sentator Coburn (R) on the other.
Both - all the committee -was grandstanding for the C-Span cameras, more than they seemed to be concerned for the actual future of the already doomed court. But that said, I do have to give the prize to the Republican Coburn who was so carried away by his own hypocrisy that he began- NO KIDDING! - to sob at the low state our political diviseness has brought us to...oh, his poor country and the finger pointing and the urge to condemn!
What is a poor Christian Senator to do when what he thinks is a heart, is broken? So moved was he by his own depth of emotion, that it was easy to forget that Coburn is, if famous for anything other than botched surgical procedures, famous for being the author of the idea that homosexuals are the reason for the demise of a great nation, and that abortionists should receive the death penalty.
He weeps.
I weep.
We all have reason to weep, because, thank god for C-Span, Coburn was actually caught by the camera DOING A CROSS WORD PUZZLE!!!
Thus Roberts - who he? He and his All American boy pleasantries and his baseball analogies are lost in the big show under the big top, or big Dome in this case. And while I personally yield to no man or woman in support of the female having the incontrovertible right to choose how she excercises the reproductive rights which should be hers alone, I do think that the issue is now being used by all sides to disguise that none of the participants in what is now a charade, have a fucking idea in hell about what to do about the real and present threats to the Republic and/or to the survival of the planet.
We are -looking at that collection of clowns - up the creek without a paddle: prayer isn't gonna cure what ails us. Roberts, in the grand scheme of our disasterous leadership by the Bush administration, and with no sign of real life from any Democrat present or on the horizon, doesn't even seem important enough to worry about.
So, Mazel Tov Chief Justice Roberts. Try not to soil the seat once held by Jay, Marshall, Warren, and Burger.

Curmudgeon is it? I'll take that under advisement.
It's not just what Biden has "been quoted as saying" but rather it's what he actually said.
Of course I meant curmudgeon in the most friendly of ways :-D
Thanks for the update Eric. When I ran across the quote, I couldn't find independent verification.
